Emergency Medicine Courses (EMC)

Trauma and medical emergencies can strike at any time, which requires medical professionals to respond promptly with the knowledge and skills to save and make a difference in the life of your patient.

ATA International Training offers a stimulating Emergency Medicine Program (EMC) which includes a theoretical & practical component, designed to offer you, the healthcare practitioner (i.e. medical, paramedical and nursing practitioners) a comprehensive, informative and exciting way to improve your proficiency in the management of medical, cardiac, surgical and trauma emergencies.

The theoretical component of the EMC program is customized to include three well-recognized, internationally accredited courses supported by associations in the United States of America and the Republic of South Africa.

Using basic and advanced equipment and a systematic approach, the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS™) or International Trauma Life Support course (ITLS™) and the Advanced Cardiac Life Support course (ACLS™), which is preceded by the Basic Life Support course (BLS™) provides delegates with the necessary life-saving skills to effectively respond to an emergency in the critical ‘Golden Hour’.

Upon successful completion, delegates will receive full certification.

The exciting Practical component is carefully structured to compliment the theoretical aspect of the program and includes practical training in three key areas, which you would have the opportunity to rotate through:

Pre-Hospital Management - Delegates accompany Advanced Life Support paramedics on a privately operated emergency medical service (i.e. ambulance service). This is essentially a road-based service and delegates will receive exposure to the initial management of medical and surgical emergencies. In addition, there is the exposure to the use of immobilization equipment and the extrication of patients.

Trauma Unit - Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital affiliated with WITS Medical School, provides clinical education and training in addition to delivering medical care to patients. This is a level one trauma hospital and one of the busiest trauma units in the world. Delegates are guaranteed to be exposed to a wide variety of trauma related conditions and the management of these patients in the initial resuscitation phase with the rest of the trauma team. In addition, there are opportunities to assist with medical and surgical interventions and procedures such as intubation, inter-costal drain insertion, central line placement, suturing etc. Opportunities to attend theatre cases are also made available.

Trauma Intensive Care Unit - Delegates are exposed to the continued management of severely injured patients in a world-class intensive care setting. They will be expected to actively participate in a wide range of patient management activities, in addition to participating in ward rounds presented by surgical registrars and surgical consultants.
