AMBULANCE AND EMERGENCY CARE WORKER/PARAMEDIC

The primary function of an Ambulance and Emergency Care Worker is the resuscitation & stabilization of critically ill or injured persons by performing the necessary emergency care before and during transportation to the hospital.

JOB CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ECW

• Transporting and caring for sick and injured people.
• Responding promptly to emergency calls with due regard to the requirements of traffic safety and to legislation pertaining to the operation of emergency vehicles.
• Undertaking a rapid survey of both the situation and the patients to establish the needs on arrival at the scene and to effectively decide upon suitable treatment.
• Ensuring the safety of the site by maintaining safety standards and removing the patient from further potential hazards.
• Administering shock treatment, dressing wounds, providing cardiac massage and/or mouth-to-mouth respiration and other suitable medical techniques to stabilize a patient.
• Supplying the medical staff with an accurate report of the patient’s condition, treatment and if possible, medical history.
• Ensuring the cleanliness of both the vehicle and equipment and replacing supplies before the emergency call.
